309 - What About Work? Measuring the Effectiveness of Medical Student Education on OEM

The University of Maryland School of Medicine has a 100-hour elective on OEM for preclinical medical students, which is now in its fourth cohort. In this session, we will describe how this course was implemented, delivered, has been accepted, and has evolved. What has been the impact of this course? We will share feedback from the students about what has worked to engage them and what has not worked as a teaching method. We will describe the impact of the course on engaging students in projects and research related to OEM. Ultimately, the goal of this course is to teach medical students the importance of asking their patients about work and considering both sides of the OEM equation - the impact of work factors on health (causation, etc.) and the impact of health factors on work (need for accommodations, etc.) We are planning a study to measure the impact of the course using medical student patient documentation submitted during subsequent clinical interactions and will describe the planned study protocol and preliminary findings.
