317 - Identifying Practices Likely to Benefit Safety for Both Healthcare Workers and Patients: A Scoping Meta-review

Growing awareness of synergies between safety for patients and workers has led many countries to initiate efforts to improve healthcare worker (HCW) well-being. Few studies have evaluated practices that improve safety for both workers and patients. Given the topic's breadth, we undertook a NIOSH-supported scoping meta-review of systematic reviews (SR) to assess to what extent existing literature identifies practices that improve safety for both workers and patients. For inclusion, the SR must have been published from 2011 through 2020 and reported outcome measures from actions or associations related to improving HCW safety, well-being or organizational safety culture and patient safety. After multi-stage screening of 1619 abstracts and 642 full texts,114 reviews met inclusion criteria. Of 78 addressing a specific practice, we identified 48 practices likely to benefit both workers and patients. Findings revealed a wide range of actions and topic areas that can be targeted to directly and indirectly improve safety for both, which strengthens the case for considering an integrated, non-siloed approach to safety improvement
