315 - Global Forces, Local Health: The Big Picture in Underserved Occupational Populations

The problems of underserved occupational populations have focused on a handful of obvious issues - ethnicity and language, sanitation, agricultural hazards, and basic awareness of occupational safety and health. This session will broaden the discussion to develop a model of what is meant by "underserved" and what is meant by “occupational". Marginalized communities have fewer physical resources and assets.1 They rely more heavily on social support and communication networks, rather than public services and entitlement programs. They need access to health services and reduce exposure to occupational risks.2 Work tends to be low-skilled and low-paying. Workers are easily replaceable, and safety protections are inadequate.3 Solutions are more complicated than targeted interventions for specific problems. The session will address worker health and safety from a community and economic development perspective.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify at least three socioeconomic disparities affecting underserved occupational populations.
  • Incorporate at least two practices into clinical encounters that address disparities and improve occupational and environmental health outcomes.
  • List resources that OEM clinicians can access to address socioeconomic, environmental and occupational disparities in their clinical practices. Learning Objectives: 3.
