227 - Wecanwork: The Intersection of Occupational Medicine and Oncology to Improve Cancer Survivor Employment and Well-being Outcomes

Employed cancer survivors often work during treatment because work provides a distraction from their diagnosis and in many jobs, offers social and emotional support. Work also provides income and in the U.S. determines access to employment-based health insurance, two main concerns for people undergoing an expensive disease to treat that is associated with extreme financial burden. There are many supportive services available to patients diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment. However, in typical oncology practice, few care team members consider themselves experts on employment-related challenges that arise during cancer treatment. This session will present a three-part overview of a mixed-method study and intervention bridging occupational medicine practice with oncology practice to address employed survivors' work-associated needs.

  • Demonstrate evidence-based practices for addressing work-related issues during treatment.
  • Describe occupatonal medicine role in oncology practice to consult with patients in benefiting treatment, employment and well-being.
