320 - 100 Years of Nurse Practitioner - Occupational Physician Collaboration

The three presenters together represent almost 100 person-years of physician nurse practitioner collaboration in academics, primary care, large health care systems, and regulatory / enforcement agencies. Each presenter will briefly outline their own work and collaboration, the principles and infrastructures that made that possible, and the problems that arose. In the course of the presentation, the evolution of formal relationships; the operational histories, including professional regulations; and the implications for clinical practice, including scope and licensing, will become clear. The presenters will describe the approaches to collaboration that evolved based on quality management principles in health care systems.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the history of nurse practitioner - physician collaboraiton, including Know the constriants imposed on nurse practitioner practiuce by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
Collaborate across disciplines in clinical and administrative processes abd understand the boiundaries.
Recognize limitations in clinical management skills of both nurse practitioners and physicians for complex cases in healthcare and select appropriate protocols and processes for successful collaboration.
