US Dept of Commerce: NIST Safety Commission: Investigation, Report and Engineering & Occupational and Environmental Medicine Lessons LearnedAudience members will learn firsthand from members of the United States Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology 2023 Safety Commission who were appointed to perform an in-depth years long independent FACA evaluation and reports regarding two critical safety incidents at one of our nations oldest active National Laboratories. The charge of the commission will be reviewed and highlights from the interim and final reports will be discussed with special emphasis on the Engineering and Occupational and Environmental Medicine challenges and discoveries and technical considerations. Understanding and importance of both the ANSI Z-10 and ISO 45001 Occupational and Environmental Health Management System Standards will be emphasized and reviewed. The importance of the role of Occupational & Environmental Medicine Physicians, Professional Engineers, CSPs, and leadership working together to gather facts and analyze complex multi-layer safety and system events will be explored.
