Since 1996, the Building Trades National Medical Screening Program (BTMed) has provided free medical screening to a cohort of 28,000 construction workers from Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear weapons sites. With nearly 30 years of experience, BTMed's research offers valuable insights not only for occupational health in construction but beyond. This session will highlight critical findings, including: - Chronic beryllium disease risk in workers with a single positive BeLPT - Links between hearing loss and mortality - The effectiveness of occupational health colon screening in cancer prevention - Expanding lung cancer screening to address occupational exposures - Mortality trends from occupational illness over time
Learning Objectives:
Determine when and how to obtain a competent work-up for chronic beryllium disease in workers with sensitization.
Advocate for expansion of lung cancer screening eligibilty in workers with occupational risk factors, who may not meet the standard smoking-based criteria.
Plan to incorporate colorectal cancer screening in occupational health visits for other purposes.
