115 - The Challenges and Opportunities in Environmental Medicine Through International Programs and Experience: Global Research, Impact, and Training [GRIT]

Environmental exposures in resource-poor countries are significant not only because of consequent morbidity and mortality but also because they often elucidate risks that may be otherwise unknown. This session will present the current status of international training in environmental health and describe transnational and trans-institutional opportunities for global research, education, toxicology, clinical medicine, and public health. Methods for bridging the geographic distance and ensuring lessons are shared in all directions will be presented. Potential pitfalls will be discussed. Dust, charcoal, smoke, and exhaust are among the exposures that affect rural as well as urban communities. The session will include a discussion of artificial intelligence and the possibilities for its utility in global collaborations.

Learning Objectives:

Identify opportunities for collaborative research, training, and clinical service in resource-poor areas. Participants will undersand the complexities and some of the hurdles that must be overcome for trans-national and trans-institutional collaboration.
Recognize similarities and differences in OEM priorities, practices, and impact in resource-poor settings contrasted to resource-rich settings such as the USA.
Explain the power and problems of using Artificial Intelligence in education, research, and clinical care in resource-poor settings. Some issues are the same as AI in resource-rich settings (e.g., USA); some are unique.
