Dr. Thanassi double-majored at Yale University, completed training at Stanford Medical School and returned to Yale for Emergency Medicine Residency. She did a Master's in economics at Stanford. After practicing emergency medicine she moved full-time to Occupational Health at the Veterans Health Administration spending time working for VA Central Office in Washington DC primarily on issues surrounding tuberculosis diagnostics and policy for the VHA's 400,000 health care workers. She was Professor of Medicine and Population Health at Stanford, and now works as the Senior Medical Director, TB & Infectious Diseases for Qiagen. She has been plenary and keynote speaker at national and international meetings, has published and conducted FDA trial research and co-authored the CDC's 2019 MMWR that removed annual TB testing for health care workers, is a member of the CDC's Advisory Council for the Elimination of TB and is the US Representative to the International Congress on Occupational Health.
