Michelle W. Robertson, MD, MPH joined the NJ WRIISC in 2013 as an Occupational and Environmental Medicine staff physician, where she provides consultations regarding military exposures. She is the Clinical Director of the Airborne Hazards and Burn Pit Center of Excellence and has a particular interest in respiratory irritants and related health effects. She is also the facility lead registry environmental health clinician where she provides registry evaluations for VA's environmental health registries: Agent Orange, Gulf War, Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pits, Depleted Uranium, Toxic Embedded Fragments, and Ionizing Radiation. It was in this capacity that Dr. Robertson spearheaded the effort at East Orange VA to offer burn pit registry evaluations for ~1500 Veterans in 2022. Her other areas of interest include institutional betrayal, moral injury, environmental justice and garrison exposures, such as Camp Lejeune.
Prior to joining the WRIISC, Dr. Robertson was a family medicine physician before completing fellowship training in occupational medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now Rutgers University), while also obtaining her Master's degree in Environmental and Occupational Health. After completing her training, she joined the staff at the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute where she provided care to injured workers, performed surveillance evaluations, and treated first-responders in the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program. She also served as the Associate Director of the residency training program in Occupational and Environmental Medicine and she continues to mentor occupational and preventive medicine residents and fellows. Dr. Robertson is board-certified in both Family Medicine and Occupational Medicine.
Since joining the WRIISC, Dr. Robertson has distinguished herself as a national speaker and has presented national organizations, including the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, American College of Preventive Medicine, and the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States.
