Dr. Wimalawansa, MD, PhD, MBA, DSc, is a physician-scientist, researcher, educator, author, innovator, philanthropist, board member, leader, and process consultant. His clinical expertise spans endocrinology, human nutrition, vitamin D, metabolic disorders, osteoporosis, chronic kidney disease, health policy, social sciences, and disease prevention. He is a former University Professor and Professor of Medicine, having served as Chief of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Nutrition, and Physiology/Pharmacology at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Rutgers University. Dr. Wimalawansa’s notable innovations include vasodilatory CGRP therapy for cardiovascular diseases, once-weekly bisphosphonates, combination therapies, and nitric oxide regimens for osteoporosis. In 1984, he pioneered intraoperative hormone measurement, a global standard of care, helping millions of patients. He was the first to use telemedicine to diagnose and treat patients in remote locations in Texas. As a process consultant and Lean Six Sigma executive, he serves on national and international boards and non-profit organizations, focusing on micronutrient research and disease prevention. Dr. Wimalawansa has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award (2004) from the USA Foundation for contributions to science and humanity, the Oscar Gluck International Humanitarian Award (2008), and the Eugene T. Davidson, MD, Service Award for Public Health (2024) from AACE. He has played a key role in scientific review committees such as NIH, VA, DEA, and NASA. He has significantly contributed to academia and research with over 500 invited global presentations, 300+ peer-reviewed articles, and multiple books and book chapters. He has also taught at undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels and has provided free medical training courses internationally.
