In 2023, Cummins Inc., a global power-solutions manufacturing company, established a Corporate Medicine residency rotation in partnership with the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (RMCOEH) Occupational Medicine residency program. The primary objective for this program is to provide Occupation and Environmental Medicine residents with comprehensive and real-world exposure to the world of Corporate Medicine. Residents gain firsthand experience with: the administration and management aspects of Occupational Health Services programs within a corporate setting, a global and multicultural perspective on employee health, current medical-legal challenges and solutions, stakeholder management, disaster and emergency preparedness for corporations, travel medicine, compensation and contract negotiation, networking and collaboration, and the role and duties of corporate medical directors. The rotation also includes a Corporate Medical Director Networking Circuit which connects rotating residents for one-on-one conversations with other Corporate Medical Directors at major companies.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the experience, challenges, and rewards of establishing a Corporate Medicine residency rotation at a global manufacturing company.
Identify the design and core elements of a Corporate Medicine rotation to provide resident physicians with a high-value experience.
Discuss next steps for creating meaningful, real-world residency training experiences and networking opportunities within Corporate Medicine.
