This traditional lecture will explore the complex and evolving landscape of cannabis in the United States and its impact on employers and workplace safety. It will outline the major legal milestones of cannabis, potential future legal landmarks, and discuss how its legalization in many jurisdictions has brought to the forefront the complex issue of workplace safety and performance. The didactic will examine employer-based drug testing for cannabis and how it varies significantly across the United States. Lastly, this lecture focuses on cannabis detection in the oral fluid matrix and comparing to urine. Analyte, cut-off levels, and window of detection differences will be highlighted and used to show how oral fluid drug testing will allow employers to better comply with some state laws while still allowing for identification of recent cannabis use and subsequently help to ensure a safe and productive workplace.
*Cannabis is a new and evolving topic. In this session, Dr. Cale will help facilitate engagement with the topic without advocating for, or promoting, practices that are not, or not yet adequately based on current science, evidence, and clinical reasoning.
