323 - Two Decades of Experience: Insights from a National Former Worker Medical Surveillance Project - Outcomes and Lessons Learned

Over nearly 20 years, the National Supplemental Screening Program (NSSP) has performed over 35,000 medical examinations for nearly 22,000 former U.S. energy workers with widely varying demographic backgrounds and occupational experiences. Through continuous, methodical collection and analysis of data from surveys and clinical findings, produced in operation of this program, the NSSP has cultivated an extensive knowledge base about longitudinal health surveillance of a unique occupational cohort. The NSSP's program design and its distinctive mission to surveil former workers presents an opportunity to link latent health effects with the exposures that may have contributed to their development. In this blended session, we delve into the program's epidemiological trends, research initiatives and findings, and lessons learned in administering this voluntary medical screening program. A traditional lecture will be followed by a panel discussion featuring NSSP subject matter experts.

  • Explain how Total Worker HealthTM can be applied to longitudinal medical screening program design and describe the benefits and challenges associated with this integration.
  • Discuss the ways in which a longitudinal surveillance approach to medical screening program implementation can inform the primary prevention strategies of employers.
  • Describe how post-employment medical screening program design differs from current-worker surveillance and identify the benefits and challenges unique to the former.
