As retirements and a reduced number of residency positions over time have increased the demand for experienced OEM physicians and reduced the pipeline for training, early and mid-career OEM physicians need to prepare for positions of greater responsibility and scope earlier in their career paths. This session will focus on the topic of 'How to get ready before you are ready', identifying key areas of OEM expertise that can be developed via innovative self-directed learning and experiences for these physicians to prepare for leadership positions, and identifying sources for this learning and development. The session will consist of a case-based approach with a review of job descriptions, sample fictional CVs, and an interactive exercise where learners will identify key gaps and recommend development paths to fill these gaps using small group (table) discussion of 15 mins and then share with the larger group. The session will highlight ACOEM and external resources for leadership and career development for early and mid-career OEM physicians.
Learning Objectives:
Identify knowledge areas that are essential to preparing for leadership positions in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, particularly in the corporate setting.
Identify alternative ways to obtain knowledge and experience using innovative methods to 'leapfrog' traditional learning methods and timelines to prepare to fill the need for qualified OEM leaders.
Create a draft plan to use an innovative or nontraditional path to fill personal knowledge and experience gaps.
