At the CMC VAMC, Philadelphia PA, we launched an environmental exposure consult service available for referral by VA providers, dedicated to supporting veterans who face health concerns linked to environmental exposures but are not covered by established registries. This service provides specialty consult in environmental exposure questions that originate from veteran concerns to their providers. Once the referral has been generated, the consult service offers veterans a comprehensive evaluation of their environmental exposure and possible associated health effects. By offering detailed risk assessments and clear communication of potential health impacts, we empower veterans and their primary care providers to make informed decisions regarding current and future health concerns. Within this session, I will present the aggregate data gathered for these consults and discuss what our specialty can learn to shape the future of environmental exposure consult services.
Learning Objectives:
Define the components of an environmental exposure exam from the perspective of a clinician and the patient.
Apply principles of risk assessment and communication of that risk for an environmental exposure.
Evaluate strategies for incorporating environmental exposure assessments into clinical practice.
